The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) is making strides toward launching a comprehensive National Fiberization Policy. This initiative aims to establish a strong foundation for high-speed internet infrastructure.
According to official documents, the MoITT is collaborating with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to perform a detailed risk assessment of the existing fiber cable network across the country. This assessment will help identify vulnerabilities and pave the way for an efficient upgrade of the current infrastructure.
A key focus of the policy is to promote widespread deployment of fiber optic networks, ensuring enhanced broadband coverage. By bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas, the initiative seeks to make high-speed internet accessible to underserved communities, fostering greater digital inclusivity.
The new policy is expected to bolster Pakistan’s digital ecosystem by supporting advanced technologies such as 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies demand robust and high-capacity networks, and the policy aims to position Pakistan as a competitive force in the global digital landscape.
The enhanced infrastructure will also benefit sectors like education, healthcare, and e-governance, driving socio-economic development nationwide. Another significant aspect of the policy is its emphasis on promoting local manufacturing under the “Make in Pakistan” initiative.
By reducing reliance on imported optical fiber and related components, the policy aims to stimulate economic growth and attract investments in domestic production. It also seeks to improve Pakistan’s performance in global digital benchmarks, such as the ICT Development Index and Broadband Development Index.
