This is not the first incident of its kind in Palestine. In 2019, the Israeli municipality in Safed turned the historic Al-Ahmar Mosque into a bar and events hall, according to Al-Quds Al-Arabi. Initially, after the Arab city was occupied by the Jewish gangs in 1948, the mosque was converted into a Jewish school, then a center for Likud’s election campaigns, and later a clothes warehouse before its final transformation into a nightclub.
The London-based newspaper reported that a firm affiliated with the Israeli municipality renamed the mosque from Al-Ahmar Mosque to Khan Al-Ahmar and repurposed it as a bar and wedding hall. Khair Tabari, secretary of the Safed and Tiberias Islamic endowment, stated that he has been awaiting a decision from the Nazareth court on a complaint he filed seeking the mosque’s evacuation and return to the endowment.
