A lecturer at Islamia University Bahawalpur has been arrested on charges of allegedly sexually harassing and blackmailing a female student.
According to the police, a case has been registered against the lecturer based on the student’s complaint.
The FIR states that the lecturer sent inappropriate messages and obscene videos via WhatsApp to the student.
The complaint also mentions that the accused threatened to fail the student in exams and have her expelled from the university if she did not agree to an illicit relationship.
The police have registered the case and arrested the lecturer on charges of harassment and blackmail.
Section 509 of the Pakistan Penal Code says that if a person demands sexual favors and uses a verbal or non-verbal form of communication, causing any annoyance, the person is liable to a punishment of three years or a fine or both.
Such cases are not uncommon in Pakistan, but due to ineffective prosecution and policing, the accused often go unpunished.
