Pakistani journalist and TV host Iqrar Ul Hassan has weighed in following a Lahore session court ruling in favor of singer Ali Zafar in his high profile defamation case against Meesha Shafi.
The court ordered Meesha Shafi to pay a penalty of Rs. 5 million, a decision that has reignited discussions on defamation, workplace harassment claims, and accountability in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
Iqrar expressed that the penalty imposed on Meesha is far too minor compared to the emotional and professional toll Ali Zafar endured during the prolonged legal battle. He emphasized that such cases, if not addressed firmly, risk undermining the credibility of genuine victims of harassment, and suggested that false allegations should serve as cautionary examples.
“Ali Zafar has endured significant pain and challenges due to these false claims. In comparison, a Rs. 5 million penalty is negligible,” Iqrar said.
“Cases like these can weaken the trust in the system for women who are truly victims of harassment. Ali deserves recognition for remaining steadfast and taking this case to its rightful conclusion.”
The defamation suit stemmed from public allegations made by Meesha Shafi several years ago, accusing Ali Zafar of misconduct. While Ali consistently denied the claims and sought legal recourse to defend his reputation, Meesha maintained that her statements were part of a broader conversation on speaking up against misconduct in the workplace.
