Karachi Cantonment Railway Station is one of the historic places in the southern port city of Pakistan. However, after not being renovated for decades, it had become somewhat dilapidated, even though thousands of commuters travel through it every day. But that is in the past now, as Pakistan Railways has decided to give it its due. Cantt Station has received a completely new facelift with modern facilities such as beautiful lounges, free Wi-Fi, and other amenities. If you visit Cantt Station now, you will see this historic Karachi railway station in an entirely new look.
It was earlier known as Frere Street Station. Construction of the station began in 1896 and was completed in 1898 at a total cost of 80,000 rupees. The present building of Karachi Cantt station has been declared a protected heritage site by the Government of Sindh.
Under the new renovations, two impressive CIP lounges have been built, featuring elegant furniture, comfortable seating, and attractive décor to make passengers’ waiting time pleasant. But there’s a caveat, visitors will have to pay to stay in these lounges.
From the seats placed near the lounge windows, you can view train arrivals, departures, and the platform scene.
Two free economy lounges have also been created at Cantt Station, and their quality is nearly comparable to the CIP lounges.
To further modernize the station, escalators have now been installed. So if you need to move from one platform to another, or if you are carrying heavy luggage, you can benefit from this facility.
Clean and well-maintained washrooms have also been built at Cantt Station. Whether you are about to travel or have just returned, you can freshen up here before heading home or to your destination.
In addition, Cantt Station now offers free Wi-Fi and ticket vending machines, similar to those found in modern railway stations.
