A tragic incident unfolded in Karachi on Thursday, December 12, 2024, when the family of a doctor was exposed to harmful chemicals after fumigation was carried out in their home, leading to the death of a minor and the hospitalization of several family members. The incident was reported at 10:35 AM by South City Hospital.
Dr. Zia Uddin Sheikh, the Director of Sir Syed Hospital Karachi, had arranged for fumigation in the basement of his residence located at House No. 89-B/3, Street 24, Kha-e-Sehar, Phase 6 DHA Karachi, with the intention of eliminating mosquitoes. Following the advice of the fumigation company, the family sealed the basement and locked it for two days to allow the chemicals to take effect. However, the fumigation proved to be more toxic than anticipated.
As a result, the entire family, including minors, fell unconscious. Tragically, five-year-old Moeeuddin died from the exposure. The rest of the family members were rushed to South City Hospital for treatment.
The affected family members are:
- Zohaib (13 years old)
- Shazain (11 years old)
- Jannat (8 years old)
- Zara (16 years old)
- Moeeuddin (5 years old, who passed away)
Despite immediate medical attention, Moeeuddin tragically passed away due to the effects of the fumigation. Other family members are currently receiving treatment in the hospital for poisoning and are reported to be in stable condition.
Duty Officer SI Naeem Awan has visited South City Hospital for further investigation into the incident. Authorities are conducting an inquiry to determine the full details and cause of the tragedy.
