The Indian opposition party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), founded by Raj Thackeray, has stated that it will not permit the release of Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’s movie The Legend of Maula Jatt in India.
Politician and producer Ameya Khopkar declared that Pakistani films will not be allowed to be released in the country. “We will not allow the release of Pakistani films, nor will we allow their artists to work in Indian films,” he stated.
Khopkar emphasized his stance: “It is most infuriating that an Indian company is leading this plan. Following Raj Saheb’s orders, we will not let this film be released anywhere in India.”
Despite the threats from Hindu extremists, fans remain excited about the film’s release. Earlier on Wednesday, the film, produced by Ammara Hikmat and directed by Bilal Lashari, marked a significant milestone for cross-border cinema as its release date for India was confirmed. Lashari expressed pride on social media, highlighting that even after two years, The Legend of Maula Jatt continues to draw packed cinemas in Pakistan.
In a heartfelt post accompanying the film’s poster, Lashari shared his eagerness for Indian audiences: “I can’t wait for our Punjabi audience in India to experience the magic of this labour of love! Releasing in India, Punjab on Wednesday, 2nd Oct! Two years in, and still house full on weekends in Pakistan!”
It’s worth noting that despite political tensions and changing diplomatic relations, both Pakistan and India have a shared history of artists collaborating across borders. Popular actors such as Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Sara Loren, and others have worked in Indian cinema, receiving significant admiration for their craft. Similarly, Indian actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Kirron Kher have previously appeared in Pakistani entertainment media.
