The tournament was first held in 1881 and originally known as the U.S. National Championships. The 145th edition of the U.S. Open is underway from August 24 and will end on September 7.
The U.S. Open is held in Flushing Meadows, New York.
The three main showcourts are the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and Grandstand.
The top-ranked players automatically enter the main draw, with 32 of them seeded to prevent early-round match-ups between top contenders. Seedings are based on ATP and WTA rankings.
