Greece boat accident probe report to be submitted within week: Interior Minister

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah assured that the government would take strict action about Greek boat accident and investigation report would be submitted within a week by duly fixing responsibility on those involved in negligence.

In response to the Greece boat accident, the minister said a committee constituted under strict directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commenced investigation. He said the committee will present its report in a week and further action will be taken by the federal government.

He said the committee will ascertain facts of the Greece boat tragedy besides identifying loopholes and lapses in the legal mechanism in Pakistan that exposed precious human lives to the vagaries of human trafficking in this particular case and similar incidents in the past.

The committee will also analyze similar past incidents and actions will be taken according to the legal framework, adding, International coordination will also help prevent, control, and punish human smuggling in the future, he added.

He further mentioned the government will also review short-term and long-term legislation to curb the issue besides envisaging laws for giving penalties to the people responsible for such kinds of incidents.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari held telephonic conversation with his Greek counterpart V. Kaskarelis and discussed the tragic ferry disaster off the coast of Greece.

During the conversation, the two sides agreed to closely work together to facilitate Pakistanis in distress and for the identification and repatriation of retrieved bodies.

The Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) set up a desk in Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) to collect the DNA samples of the family members of missing persons in the Greece boat tragedy.

The process of collecting DNA samples of the missing persons is underway where samples are being collected from the family members. The FIA stated that DNA samples of the family members will help identify the missing persons. DNA samples from 25 families have been collected so far.
