The federal government has announced the formation of a task force aimed at addressing the challenges related to capacity payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and implementing necessary reforms in the power sector.
Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari will chair the task force, with newly appointed Special Assistant Muhammad Ali serving as co-chairman. Lieutenant General Muhammad Zafar Iqbal will act as the National Coordinator.
The task force will include members from key organizations such as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G), Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB), and the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). The group is expected to present its recommendations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif within a month, focusing on reducing capacity payments to IPPs and addressing other related issues to ensure the financial stability of the power sector.
NEPRA was established to regulate electric power services in Pakistan, CPPA-G manages power procurement and is wholly government-owned, PPIB promotes private investment in the power sector and facilitates public sector projects, and SECP regulates the corporate sector and capital markets.
