The government has termed the rumors of not reducing the base electricity tariff as baseless, stating that through the determination of Quarterly Adjustment and Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA), consumers have started receiving a relief of Rs7.41 per unit, in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement.
According to a report, NEPRA held a hearing on Saturday to provide immediate relief to the public, during which NEPRA and the relevant ministry clarified the facts and figures. A spokesperson for the Power Division said that applying the relief announced by the Prime Minister is only possible by altering the tariff for consumers through Quarterly Tariff Adjustment and FCA.
According to the Power Division spokesperson, NEPRA had called for a public hearing. The Prime Minister decided to transfer the relief quickly in view of the summer heat and public hardships, while the media claimed that there had been no change in the base tariff, which is tantamount to twisting the facts. The government deserves credit for reducing the per-unit electricity price for the public.
Power Division spokesperson Zafaryab stated that the government made continuous efforts to provide relief to the public during the summer, and that relief has been made possible. Over the past several months, a task force negotiated tariffs with IPPs to make this relief feasible. Even the media reports acknowledge the fact that relief for consumers has begun.
He said that the media headlines were crafted in a way that created confusion. The Power Division stated that through Quarterly Adjustment and FCA, consumers have started receiving Rs7.41 per unit relief as per the Prime Minister’s announcement. It is worth noting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif gave the good news of a reduction in electricity prices to the public three days ago.
