People across Pakistan will have two consecutive public holidays in mid-July 2024 for Ashura, observed on Muharram 9 and 10. The federal government has already included these holidays in its 2024 holiday calendar.
The exact dates of the holidays will be finalized based on the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s decision regarding the sighting of the Muharram moon.
If the moon is sighted on July 6, the first of Muharram will be observed on July 7, and Ashura will fall on July 15 and 16. In this case, the public holidays will be on July 15 and 16 (Monday and Tuesday).
If the new Islamic year starts on July 8, Ashura will be observed on July 16 and 17. Consequently, the public holidays will be on July 16 and 17 (Tuesday and Wednesday).
The government may also suspend internet and mobile phone services during these holidays for security reasons, as Muharram processions are conducted across the country. Some roads also remain closed for two days due to these processions.
