To bolster tax enforcement among non-filers, the federal government is exploring various measures, one of which involves preventing non-filers from traveling abroad.
According to sources, the existing measures outlined in the law for individuals who opt to remain non-filers after receiving notices include disabling mobile phone SIMs and discontinuing utility connections.
It is worth noting that in April, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) issued an Income Tax General Order (ITGO) to deactivate the mobile phone SIMs of over 0.5 million individuals not listed as active taxpayers but required to file Income Tax Returns for Tax Year 2023.
In a bid to raise the stakes for non-compliance and compel non-filers to file returns, the proposal suggests prohibiting non-filers from leaving the country.
However, exceptions would be made for individuals traveling for Umrah, Hajj, minors, or students.
