GILGIT: The Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution today (Tuesday) demanding to make the region an ‘interim province’ by amending the Constitution of Pakistan immediately.
According to the legislation, the Regional legislature demanded an appropriate representation for the Gilgit Baltistan region in Pakistan’s National Assembly, Senate and other federal institutions.
The resolution, tabled jointly by the government and the opposition, further demanded an interim province status for the region and amendments in Pakistan’s constitution to provide constitutional cover to it.
“While amending the Constitution, it should also be taken in view to ensure a continuity in Pakistan’s stance over the Kashmir dispute,” the resolution read. The resolution also vows that the people of Gilgit Baltistan region would continue supporting the freedom struggle of Kashmiris.
Speaker Syed Amjad Ali Zaidi chaired the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly’s Tuesday session. GB Labour Minister Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Abdullah Baig also signed the resolution.
It is pertinent to mention here that in a regional election held in November last year, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had won the required number of seats in the assembly to form its government in Gilgit-Baltistan.
