KARACHI: Police on Saturday claimed to have busted a gang involved in selling drugs through social media from Shireen Jinnah Colony of the metropolis.
On a tip-off, a five-member gang was apprehended by police, who used to sell drugs through social media platforms. The arrested gang members included a woman allegedly involved in supplying narcotics to girls in posh areas of the city.
According to the initial investigation, the accused used different social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to trap the people. SSP Keamari Fida Hussain told the media that 20 kilograms of narcotics were recovered from their possession the criminals during the raid.
The criminals used to sell the drugs to people in Keamari, Defence and Clifton areas, he said, adding that the alleged drug peddlers received orders from social media apps and supplied the narcotics to their homes.
Nargis, one of the gang members, has supplied the drugs to girls in posh areas, said Hussain, adding that the criminals charge Rs10,000 for a packet of narcotics.
During preliminary investigation, they confessed to having smuggled narcotics from other parts of the county to different districts of the metropolis through a network of drug dens.
Earlier, the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) had arrested five drug peddlers in different areas of the metropolis.
According to ANF sources, during a crackdown on drug peddlers, an ANF team conducted a raid in the Sohrab Goth area of the city and arrested a drug peddler, Muhammad Zubair, son of Muhammad Riaz. More than two kilograms of hashish were recovered from the possession of the arrested accused.
Meanwhile, on a tip-off, ANF carried out raids in Korangi and Shah Faisal Colony and detained two drug dealers, Kashif, son of Ansaar and Nadeem Shah, son of Ahmed Hussain. The raided teams also recovered 850 grams of heroin from the custody of the accused.
Separately, a drug seller identified as Yar Muhammad son of Taj Muhammad was arrested from the Mongopir area by the ANF and recovered 650 grams of hashish from his possession.
An ANF team conducted a raid in Karachi Airport and nabbed a suspect, Imtiaz Ali son of Didar Ali. The ANF officials also recovered 750 grams of heroin from the accused.
The ANF officials registered separate cases against the arrested accused and started further investigation. Earlier, the Anti-Narcotics Forces in 16 operations carried out against drug trafficking in different parts of the country, seized 1.652 tonnes of drugs while arrested 18 persons on drug charges and impounded 9 vehicles.
According to details, the Narcotics Forces seized 1294 kg morphine 14 kg Heroin, 336.6 kg Hashish, 4.8 kg Opium and 2.650 kg of Methamphetamine (ice).
An ANF spokesman informed that the worth of the seized drugs is Rs 1.308 billion in the international market. ANF Rawalpindi Airport Team detained a passenger at Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Islamabad, and recovered 5.4 Kg Heroin concealed in his passenger bag.
