In a significant development, the Taliban government has successfully eliminated Afghanistan’s outstanding electricity debts to its four neighboring countries—Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran for the first time in the history of the country.
This marks a historic moment as Afghanistan Electric Company spokesman, Hekmatullah Mayondi, announced the complete settlement of debts through his X account.
Mayondi highlighted that addressing the debts incurred from the four neighboring countries was a critical challenge inherited by the Islamic Emirate government.

The outstanding debts, accumulated during the previous democratic administration, posed a considerable hurdle. Despite facing banking sanctions, Mayondi disclosed that the Taliban government had successfully repaid a total debt of approximately $627 million.
Emphasizing the historical significance of this achievement, Hikmatullah Mewandi stated that, for the first time, Afghanistan not only cleared its outstanding debts but also made advance payments to neighboring countries.
The debt settlement signifies a step toward financial stability and international cooperation under the Taliban administration.
It is noteworthy that a substantial portion, approximately 80%, of Afghanistan’s electricity is imported from neighboring countries. However, Afghanistan Electric Company officials have reassured the public that efforts are underway to develop internal resources. Within the next five years, they aim to generate 710 MW domestically, ensuring a more self-reliant and sustainable electricity supply for the nation.
