FIA issues warning over fake messages and online blackmail

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has cautioned citizens about fake emails and WhatsApp messages being sent under its name.

According to details, FIA spokesperson Abdul Ghaffar said that the agency has received information about unknown individuals sending fraudulent emails and WhatsApp messages under the name of the FIA Director General, harassing the public.

The statement noted that these fake messages use the DG FIA’s name and designation to intimidate people, and to make them appear authentic, they carry a counterfeit “Top Secret” stamp.

It further said that such elements use fake and misleading identities to pose as government officials, attempting to blackmail citizens by accusing them of “cybercrimes” in these messages.

The FIA clarified that it does not send such messages to any individual through WhatsApp or email.

The public has been urged to report any suspicious message or contact to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, the authorized body for investigating cybercrimes.

FIA Cautions Citizens: Beware of Scam Messages Posing as Officials (FIA)

Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant against fraudulent messages and never share personal or financial information. For further information, the public can contact the FIA helpline at 1991.

Earlier this week, the Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) issued an alert warning of an ongoing scam involving fake calls aimed at seizing WhatsApp accounts, in which callers request a verification code.

Last month, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency conducted a successful raid on an illegal call center in Islamabad, arresting five foreign nationals.

In May, the National Cyber Emergency Response Team issued an advisory stating that login credentials and passwords of over 180 million internet users in Pakistan had been stolen in a global data leak, urging the public to take immediate protective measures.
