Former England and Surrey batter Graham Thorpe tragically took his own life, according to a statement from his family.
On August 5, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced Thorpe’s death at the age of 55, leading to an outpouring of tributes for one of the nation’s finest Test players. Thorpe had represented England in 100 Test matches and 82 one-day internationals.
In an interview with The Times, Thorpe’s wife Amanda revealed that he had been battling depression and anxiety for several years. “Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved deeply, he couldn’t recover,” she shared. “He had been so unwell recently, and he truly believed we would be better off without him. We are heartbroken that he acted on those thoughts and took his own life.”
Thorpe’s daughter Kitty also spoke about the family’s decision to publicly discuss his struggles with mental health. “We are not ashamed to talk about it,” she said. “There is nothing to hide, and it should not be seen as a stigma.”
