KARACHI: Lawyers in Sindh have announced to observe complete strike on Monday, October 24, to register their protest against ignoring the rule of seniority and proposing elevation of three junior judges to the Supreme Court.
Addressing a joint press conference, leaders of the lawyers’ community from Sindh Bar Council and Pakistan Bar Council said four judges were nominated for the elevation to the Supreme Court, out of which only Justice Athar Minallah was the senior one, while the rest of three judges were junior.
On this occasion, they announced to observe complete strike on Monday, October 24, during which lawyers would boycott court proceedings, and in the event of such nominations being approved, the same shall be jointly challenged in Court.
The Bar Council and Bar Associations of Sindh appreciated the recent resolution of the Punjab Bar Council as well as Balochistan Bar Council and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council in support of the seniority principle and further expressed hope that Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association would continue to support this principled stance.
Lawyers urged upon the Supreme Judicial Council not to convene the meeting without framing relevant rules. They also thanked Justice Qazi Faez Isa for supporting the principled stance.
