Eid al Adha, Punjab, Maryam Nawaz

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a Rs50,000 fine for individuals found dumping animal waste in streets and neighborhoods during Eid-al-Adha, alongside the decision to establish vigilance squads to monitor and prevent illegal disposal of sacrificial remains.

Chairing a video-link meeting on Eid cleanliness arrangements, the chief minister directed the launch of a comprehensive public awareness campaign to discourage the dumping of offal and animal remains at prohibited locations.

She said all institutions must work as a “single government unit” to ensure cleanliness during Eid, adding that exemplary sanitation efforts would be rewarded while negligence would face strict action.

During the briefing, it was informed that vigilance squads have been formed to monitor illegal dumping activities, while biodegradable shopping bags will be distributed for the disposal of animal waste during Eid-al-Adha.

Officials further stated that rose water spraying will be carried out at Eid congregations and mosques as part of the cleanliness drive.

The provincial administration said that 176,000 sanitary workers and more than 8,000 temporary workers will participate in the Eid-al-Adha cleanliness operation under the “Suthra Punjab” campaign.

For waste management, 3,800 primary collection centres and 3,100 dumping sites have been designated across the province, while around 7,000 dumping points will be used for proper disposal of sacrificial waste. Additionally, 4,500 special camps and more than 40,000 vehicles will be deployed for the operation.

The government will also hire loaders, rickshaws, mini dumpers, tractor trolleys, and pickups to support the cleanliness drive. Citizens can report complaints via the Suthra Punjab helpline 1139.

The chief minister also directed special cleanliness monitoring of drains, canals, private housing societies, railway colonies, and cantonment areas across all cities to ensure proper sanitation arrangements during Eid-al-Adha.
