An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Saturday, while the tremors were also felt in different parts of the adjacent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the depth of the earthquake was 122 km, with its epicenter in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountain range.
Due to the high depth of the earthquake, its effects on the ground were limited; however, mild tremors were felt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the northern areas.
Locals complained of slight movement of buildings and rattling windows, but there were no immediate reports of any loss of life or property.
According to experts, earthquakes are common in the Hindu Kush region as the region is a hotbed of tectonic activity. Due to the depth and structure of the earth here, the intensity of the earthquake is felt less.
Experts have advised the public to take precautionary measures during an earthquake, such as closing windows and doors, staying away from windows, and going to open areas. Also, be prepared for possible aftershocks after an earthquake.
On Saturday, parts of Karachi were once again jolted by a light tremor.
