BADIN: Tensions have surged in Chak No. 5 of the Golarchi area in Badin district after an alleged attack by armed men, leaving the Machhi (fisher) community devastated and reportedly displaced amid a dispute linked to a love marriage.
According to reports gathered by MM News, residents allege that more than 60 houses were damaged during the incident, with the entire village reportedly left deserted.
Victims further claim the attackers took valuables and livestock from the affected homes, while many families lost the only shelter and livelihood they had.
Locals say the violence forced over 600 people to migrate and that many families were rendered homeless overnight.
Residents describe the incident as collective retaliation stemming from a personal relationship decision—an issue that, in parts of Sindh, has in the past also been connected to severe repercussions, including “honor killings,” which have continued to occur in Pakistan.
Police cite family dispute; couple insists on free will marriage
According to police, Nadeem Machhi and Alia Fatima—who, authorities said, married their love partners a few days ago—were at the center of a dispute between their families and the wider community.
The couple, however, insists they married of their own free will. Still, residents argue that the consequences have been borne by the broader village, where fear and insecurity have spread rapidly after the alleged demolitions.
Victims demand action; allege inaction by authorities
Victims claim they submitted multiple applications to the SSP Badin requesting effective intervention, but say no meaningful action has been taken so far. Following the incident, affected families have demanded investigations into the demolition of houses, alleged looting, and forced displacement, along with legal action against those responsible.
