At least 35 people were detained in Karachi on Sunday for violating Section 144, during clashes between police and protesters outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC).
The demonstrators, part of the “Sindh Rawadari March”, gathered to protest the alleged extrajudicial killing of Dr Shahnawaz Kunbhar. Dr Shahnawaz was fatally shot under controversial circumstances during a police encounter in Mirpurkhas on September 19, following accusations of sharing blasphemous content on social media.
The protest aimed to denounce religious extremism in Sindh and demanded justice for Dr Shahnawaz. In response, the Sindh government imposed Section 144 for five days starting October 13, prohibiting assemblies of four or more people in designated areas. Police barricaded streets leading to the KPC with shipping containers and deployed numerous personnel across the city, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Despite the ban on gatherings, police apprehended multiple demonstrators upon their arrival at the KPC.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed deep concern over the arrests, including those of women associated with the Sindh Rawadari March.
