Noise levels surpassed permissible limits during Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in Chandigarh on Saturday, the administration informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday.
According to a report by Indian Express, a division bench was told that “strict action” has been recommended against the violators and on December 13, the court had allowed the event with a directive to adhere to noise pollution regulations.
Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal emphasized maintaining ambient noise standards during the event. A recent PIL by a Chandigarh resident sought guidelines on managing public events at the Sector 34 exhibition ground, focusing on noise and crowd control.
Following court orders, the Deputy Commissioner formed a committee, and noise levels were monitored during the concert. The administration reported that noise levels exceeded limits prescribed under the Noise Pollution Rules, 2000.
Consequently, action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, has been proposed in a letter dated December 16, 2024. The high court had previously stated it would permit the event only if noise levels stayed within the 75 dB(A) limit at the venue’s boundary, warning of penal action otherwise.
The event marked the Chandigarh leg of Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati Tour, which began in Delhi in October.
