Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, paid heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88, praising his life of simplicity, compassion, and service to humanity.
In a letter to the papal envoy, the Dalai Lama expressed deep sadness and offered Buddhist prayers in his honor. A memorial service was also held by monks at the main Tibetan temple in Dharamsala, India.
The Dalai Lama highlighted Pope Francis’s dedication to others and called for everyone to honor his legacy by living with warmth and serving humanity.
Penpa Tsering, head of the India-based Tibetan government-in-exile, also expressed condolences, stating the Pope had embodied “the true spirit of compassion and universal brotherhood.”
The Dalai Lama, turning 90 in July, remains a spiritual symbol for Tibetans across Asia, even after stepping down from political leadership in 2011.
His passing remains a significant concern for Tibetans wary of potential Chinese influence over his succession.
