KARACHI: Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Sindh has arrested a policeman allegedly involved in the murder of a Customs informant.
Addressing a press conference, CTD in-charge Raja Umar Khattab said that former Station House Officer (SHO) of Sachal Police Station, Inspector Haroon Korai, had hired contract killers to kill customs informer Fazal, who helped the customs department prevent the smuggling of betel nuts worth Rs70 million.
Former SHO Haroon Korai and his associates abducted Fazal and later killed him while a police mobile was also used in the abduction of the customs informer. After Fazal’s killing, SHO Korai tried to portray the incident as a target killing, Khattab informed.
CTD Sindh carried out a raid and arrested four people involved in the murder including Waheed Kakar, Haroon Korai, and his gunman Akhtar Korai. The CTD has received a four day remand of the suspects which also includes a woman named Fauzia.
Umar Khattab further said that SMG used in the murder has also been recovered from the accused. He said that the search for other culprits is underway.
On July 17, Fazal was abducted from Surjani Town and his body was recovered from Steel Town on the same night. CCTV footage of the incident showed a black SUV and police mobile van was involved in the abduction.
The seized betel nuts allegedly belonged to Imran Masood and his accomplice Waheed Kakar, and a third person identified himself as Usman Shah. After the material was seized, Imran Masood reportedly contacted SHO Korai who used him for the abduction of the killing of informant Fazal.
Korai is a controversial figure in the police force and several investigations against him are underway. He was recently suspended from the post of Sachal SHO and is accused of torturing civilians in a cell.
He is also allegedly involved in land grabbing and several other crimes, including drug trafficking. He has been posted asSHO of several other police stations including PIB Colony, Landhi and Steel Town.
