PARIS: A French court has sentenced former President Nicolas Sarkozy to three years in prison for corruption and influence peddling.
As per details, Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of trying to bribe a magistrate, becoming the first president in the history of France’s post-World War II republic to face house arrest.
A Paris court on Monday convicted Sarkozy on charges of influence-peddling and corruption, sentencing him to three years in jail for giving to help a magistrate land a plum position in the principality of Monaco in exchange for confidential information about an probe into the finances of his 2007 presidential drive.
The court suspended two years of Sarkozy’s prison sentence, adding that the former president should serve the remaining year under house arrest wearing an electronic bracelet. Under French law, Sarkozy doesn’t need to serve any sentence until the appeals process is exhausted.
According to the ruling, Sarkozy used his status as a former president and the political and diplomatic relationships he built while in power to reward a magistrate who served his personal interests.
Sarkozy left the courtroom without making a statement. A lawyer for Sarkozy said he would appeal the ruling.
