ISLAMABAD: The novel coronavirus has claimed 43 more lives and infected 2,521 people during the past 24 hours after new cases of the virus reported across the country on Sunday.
As per details, Pakistan has reported 43 deaths in the last 24 hours by novel coronavirus as the number of positive cases surged to 519,291. The nationwide tally of fatalities has jumped to 10,951.
According to the latest figures by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), 2,521 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. Sindh remains the worst-hit province by the pandemic in terms of cases followed by Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad.
So far 234,654 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Sindh, 149,222 in Punjab 63,339 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 40,019 in Islamabad, 18,569 in Balochistan, 8,606 in Azad Kashmir and 4,882 in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Besides, 4,409 patients have lost their lives to the epidemic in Punjab 3,775 in Sindh, 1,779 in KP, 456 in Islamabad, 241 in Azad Kashmir, 190 in Balochistan, and 101 in GB.
Pakistan has so far conducted 7,367,622 coronavirus tests and 41,191 in the last 24 hours. 473,639 coronavirus patients have recovered in the country whereas 2,373 patients are in critical condition.
Earlier, The National Institutes of Health has confirmed a new strain of coronavirus in Pakistan. According to the National Institutes of Health, a new strain of coronavirus was found in two Pakistanis. Both returned home from the UK.
On Saturday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Dr Faisal Sultan said AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine had been approved for emergency use in Pakistan making it the first coronavirus vaccine to get the green light for use in the South Asian country.
Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) granted emergency use authorization to AstraZeneca’s COVID vaccine, the country’s health minister said.
Pakistan, which is in the midst of the second wave of coronavirus infections, Dr Faisal said it would procure more than a million doses of Sinopharm’s vaccine, but the Chinese vaccine has not yet been approved by the DRAP.
Pakistan is in the process of speaking to a number of vaccine makers, and Sultan said the country could get “in the range of tens of millions” of vaccine doses under an agreement with China’s CanSinoBio.
