BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has been re-elected for a third term on Friday.
China’s National People’s Congress passed a constitutional amendment in 2018, scrapping the limit of two five-year terms for president.
Xi’s reelection came at a plenary session of the congress, allowing him to remain at the top of the party, state and military. Xi entered an unprecedented third term as general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party last year.
Besides him, Zhao Leji was elected chairman of the 14th National People’s Congress Standing Committee on Friday at the ongoing annual session of China’s national legislature
The third plenary session of the first session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) was held on Friday morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
The meeting saw a vote on the decision draft of the State Council institutional reform plan, as well as the election of the President and Vice President of the People’s Republic of China. Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, was re-elected as President.
Out of the 2,977 NPC deputies who were expected to attend, 2,952 were present, with 25 absentees. The decision draft on the State Council institutional reform plan was approved with 2,951 votes in favor and one against.
Following this, the plenary session passed the Method for Election and Appointment at the First Session of the 14th NPC and the list of scrutineers for the first session of the 14th NPC. The election was conducted through an equal number of votes, with each person casting one vote anonymously. Different-coloured ballots represented different positions. Four sets of ballots were issued, each consisting of 2,952 ballots. The number of votes cast was equal to the number of ballots issued, and the election was deemed valid according to the Method for Election and Appointment at the First Session of the 14th NPC.
Xi Jinping is also chairman of the Central Military Commission.
