The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced an ambitious plan to develop pedestrian-friendly zones in key commercial areas of the capital, including sections of Blue Area and Jinnah Super Market.
The initiative aims to enhance urban mobility, promote walkability, and create a vibrant shopping and dining experience for both residents and visitors.
According to the project proposal, an 800-meter stretch of Blue Area—extending from the newly constructed parking plaza to Khyber Plaza and covering parts of G-7 and F-7 sectors—will be designated as an exclusive pedestrian zone. To ensure accessibility for all, the CDA will introduce an electric cart service, primarily benefiting elderly individuals and children.
A CDA official confirmed that the new multi-story parking plaza in Blue Area is in its final stages and will soon become operational.
“Our parking plaza in Blue Area is in its final stages and will become operational soon. People will park their vehicles in this facility before entering the pedestrian street,” the official stated.
The parking facility, designed to accommodate up to 950 vehicles, is expected to ease congestion in the area and encourage visitors to explore the pedestrian-friendly streets.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa recently chaired a high-level meeting to review the project’s progress. Officials briefed him on the phased development of pedestrian-friendly streets, starting with Jinnah Avenue before expanding further.
“The walk-and-shop type pedestrian street would be set up in an 800-meter area from the parking plaza to the Khyber Plaza area. In the first phase, it would be established on Jinnah Avenue side and later on, it will be expanded,” the official explained.
Additionally, three pedestrian zones will be developed in Jinnah Super Market, including the popular Gol Market area. These areas will feature high-quality pathways, food stalls from renowned restaurant chains, and recreational activities to attract visitors.
