This year many interesting movies will be screened at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
The Cannes International Film Festival is a huge affair and this year, the line-up includes Song Joong Ki’s ‘HOPE’ and Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Kennedy’.
The 10-day festival began on May 16 and will go on till May 27. Let’s take a look at a few movies that will be screened at the festival:
The Idol
‘The Idol’ is an upcoming HBO series starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp in the leading roles.
The Idol focuses on Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), an aspiring pop idol who, after having a nervous breakdown that causes her last tour to be canceled, resolves to reclaim her title as the sexiest pop star in America and begins a complex relationship with Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a self-help guru and the head of of a contemporary.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
The Fifth Indiana Jones is set in 1969 against the backdrop of the Space Race, with Indy uncomfortable over the way the US government has recruited former Nazis to help it beat the Soviets to the moon.
Monster
Monster is a 2023 Japanese drama film directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda from a screenplay written by Yuji Sakamoto.
It stars Sakura Andō as a mother who confronts a teacher after noticing disturbing changes in her son’s behavior.
The film marks the first time Kore-eda has directed a film he didn’t write himself since Maborosi (1995).
Monster had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2023, where it will compete for the Palme d’Or. The film will be released in Japan on 2 June 2023.
Hopeless
Song Joong-ki starrer features a story about a 17-year-old youngster and the middle-level commander of a criminal gang are the subjects of the movie Hopeless, also known as Hwaran.
To survive and live better lives, they come together and battle. Although they are attempting to flee, they still have to face hell on earth.
In this noir film, Yun-kyu, played by actor Hong Sa-bin, seeks to flee from his daily hardships in the movie. Yun-kyu runs into the underboss of a criminal organisation, Chi-gun (Song Joong-ki), one day, and finds himself in perilous circumstances.
Kennedy
Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy starring Rahul Bhat, Sunny Leone and Abhilash Thapliyal has been selected for the Midnight Screenings’ Section of the Cannes Film Festival. The story of a former police officer who is believed to be dead but is still seeking atonement is at the centre of the movie.
Nehemich
Nehemich, a short film, will make its debut at the Short Film’s Section. Helmed by FTII alumni Yudhajit Basu, the film will be screened at the festival in the upcoming days. Nehemich delves into how society isolates menstruating women. The story is set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sleep
Korean horror film ‘Sleep’ features Lee Sun-kyun and Jung Yu-mi as a newlywed couple. The husband, portrayed by Lee Sun-kyun, experiences severe cases of somnambulism (doing things while sleeping). Despite receiving treatment, his condition keeps on getting worse, making the wife worry about their newborn as well.
