A mysterious burned car, a misidentified body and a businessman who seemingly vanished have turned a Karachi death investigation into a suspected multimillion-rupee fraud, with police alleging that the businessman staged his own death to escape creditors, demanding Rs550 million payback.
Police said the body recovered from the car in Surjani Town on Monday was not that of rice trader Zeeshan Naz, despite initial claims by his family.
According to the investigators, the trader probably staged the incident to escape debts estimated at Rs550 million.
According to investigators, the deceased has been identified as Qurban Hussain, a resident of Muzaffargarh. Police are probing how he ended up in the vehicle and the circumstances that led to his death.
Authorities suspect the body and vehicle were deliberately set ablaze at an isolated location to create the impression that Zeeshan Naz had died in the incident.
Police have detained Zeeshan’s wife after she identified the charred remains as her husband, while his brothers declined to confirm the identification, prompting further suspicion.
Investigators recovered Zeeshan’s mobile phone, wallet, ATM cards and other personal belongings from the vehicle, along with a video linked to his alleged death. Police believe he intentionally left these items behind before disappearing.
Search operations are underway to locate Zeeshan Naz as investigators continue to examine the alleged plot.
