Security experts have warned of a new and increasingly sophisticated scam being reported in various cities across Pakistan, in which individuals attempt to gain access to citizens’ mobile phones and personal data through deception.
According to sources, the fraud is typically being carried out in public places such as shopping malls, metro stations and busy markets, where perpetrators pose as ordinary members of the public seeking assistance.
The individuals reportedly approach citizens claiming they are unable to use their phones, need help checking an application or subsidy, or have encountered a technical issue requiring assistance.
Experts say the suspects often appear well-dressed and polite in order to build trust, but in some cases pressure victims into allowing unnecessary access to their devices.
Security specialists have strongly advised the public not to hand over their phones to strangers under any circumstances, nor to open apps, links or video calls at their request. They also recommend immediately disconnecting from any unknown or suspicious video calls.
Authorities have stressed that modern “social engineering” techniques are increasingly being used to exploit public trust and goodwill, making vigilance essential.
Citizens have been urged to report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities and to raise awareness among others.
Officials added that while such scams can often be avoided through basic precautions, even minor lapses in judgment can lead to financial and personal data loss.
