An Australian hockey player Tom Craig has been detained in Paris on suspicion of purchasing cocaine, as reported by the public prosecutor’s office.
The 28-year-old athlete, who last competed in his team’s quarterfinal loss to the Netherlands at the 2024 Olympics on Sunday, was allegedly caught in the act of buying the drug.
The incident reportedly occurred in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, near an apartment building. Police intervened, arresting Craig and a 17-year-old suspected dealer. At the time of his arrest, Craig, whose identity has not been officially confirmed, was found with 1 gram of cocaine.
The Paris prosecutor’s office stated that the alleged transaction took place on the night of August 6-7. Both the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia, were apprehended. Craig was released with a warning and did not face any conviction or fine.
In a subsequent statement to the Australian Associated Press, Craig expressed remorse: “I would firstly like to apologize for what has occurred over the last 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions. My actions are my own and in no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, the sport, or the Australian Olympic team. I have embarrassed you all, and I’m truly sorry.”
