The Sindh government on Monday announced public holidays on June 25 and 26, 2026, in observance of Ashura, corresponding to Muharram 9 and 10, 1448 AH.
According to a notification issued by the chief secretary and shared by the Sindh Information Department on X, all provincial government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils will remain closed during the two days.
However, essential services will continue to operate as usual.
It is worth mentioning that Ashura is observed annually during the Islamic month of Muharram and holds deep religious significance for Muslims, particularly the Shia community.
The occasion commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
The battle is remembered as a symbol of sacrifice, courage, and resistance against injustice. Religious gatherings, processions, and mourning ceremonies are held across the country to mark the occasion.
