Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has arrived in Islamabad for a tow day visit to Pakistan and was welcomed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar among other officials. His visit is aimed to show solidarity with our flood victims.
Floods have caused widespread destruction in Pakistan, more than 1300 people have been killed, thousands are still injured and millions remain displaced. The number of people affected by the flood has been estimated more than 30 million. The UN Secretary had appealed to the international community to help Pakistan even before his arrival in the South Asian country. During his visit to Pakistan, Antonio Guterres will also meet the flood victims.
Antonio Guterres, who served as the United Nations High Commissioner for more than 10 years in the past, always appreciated Pakistan’s services on the issue of terrorism. On the occasion of his visit to Pakistan, the ruling political party of Pakistan has expressed gratitude. Earlier, the Secretary General of the United Nations had issued an appeal to give flash flood aid of 160 million dollars to Pakistan to help the victims. Pakistani officials expect his visit will help Pakistan highlight the plight of flood victims internationally.
Antonio Guterres believes that the floods in Pakistan are caused by international climate change. In his Twitter message, Antonio Guterres said that ‘I have come to Pakistan to express solidarity with the Pakistani people.’He said that after the disasters of floods in Pakistan, ‘I appeal to the international community for massive assistance to Pakistan as Pakistan is facing floods caused by climate change’.
If we evaluate the importance of Antonio Guterres’ visit to Pakistan from a diplomatic point of view, the visit of any Secretary General of the United Nations is of utmost importance because more or less the entire international community and all the countries of the continent are members of the United Nations.
When the Secretary General of such a prestigious institution visits Pakistan, the eyes of the whole world fall on the country. It is necessary that the Pakistani media and politicians give considerable importance to the visit of the UN Secretary General and utilize it for getting maximum international aid for flood victims.
