Two days ago, former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatta made a startling admission of alleged rigging in the recent general elections. Not only did he resign from his position, but he also voluntarily presented himself for arrest, even going as far as suggesting he should be given the death penalty.
This unprecedented event garnered national attention, captivating citizens and social media users alike. Additionally, the former commissioner called for the resignations of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Conversely, Punjab Information Minister Aamir Mir questioned Chatta’s mental state during a televised statement. This remark led to a heated exchange between Mir and a TV anchor, where Mir resorted to using abusive language on air. Despite the incident being captured on video and circulated on social media, it received minimal coverage in Pakistani media, possibly due to Mir’s influential connections, being the brother of renowned journalist Hamid Mir.
Subsequently, it was revealed that the police raided the home of Ashfaq Tarar, Chatta’s Personal Assistant, and arrested his relative’s brother. Tarar, who also works in the Department of Minerals, reported that Punjab Police forcibly entered the house, confiscated documents, and seized the family’s mobile phones.
Since the installation of the caretaker government in Punjab under Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, accusations of suppressing the PTI and journalists, as well as allegations of political oppression by Punjab Police, have surfaced.
During a press conference on Sunday, PML-N leader Malik Ahmed Khan expressed concerns about a potential repetition of past events similar to May 9. He accused PTI of orchestrating a propaganda campaign via social media, alleging a history of PTI’s refusal to accept election results.
Following Chatta’s resignation, PTI leaders like Gauhar Ali Khan called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, reinforcing their claims of electoral rigging and stolen mandates.
Amidst these accusations and counter-accusations, it is imperative to thoroughly investigate Chatta’s allegations to prevent further political turmoil, especially considering the country’s fragile economic situation. While blame-shifting is inherent in politics, it is crucial to prioritize national interests over personal agendas and make prudent decisions moving forward.
