KOTLI: The election atmosphere in Kotli turned tense today after Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin accused rival candidate Rajasat Khan of attempting to influence polling with armed men.
In a statement shared on social media, Yasin claimed that Khan, accompanied by nearly 50 armed individuals, was present at polling stations in Union Council Thruchi, creating fear and panic among voters.
He alleged that the presence of armed groups was undermining the democratic process and intimidating citizens exercising their right to vote.
Reports from the area suggest that voters expressed fear and hesitation at polling stations, while slow mobile service further complicated communication with the duty magistrate and the Quick Response Force (QRF). This delay, according to Yasin, hindered timely intervention by authorities.
The allegation adds to a series of controversies already surrounding the first phase of elections in 13 constituencies of Mirpur division, where earlier in the day two presiding officers were suspended and arrested in Kotli for dereliction of duty.
Prime Minister’s Advisor Rana Sanaullah also alleged rigging in LA‑10 Kotli, demanding an inquiry before results are accepted.
With the real contest between PML‑N and PPP shaping the narrative of these polls, opposition parties have repeatedly criticized the Election Commission for failing to act decisively against irregularities.
The Commission, however, has maintained that strict measures are in place to ensure transparent and impartial elections.
