Actor Adnan Siddiqui has strongly criticized Bollywood for what he described as the ruining of Pakistan’s renowned folk singer Reshma’s iconic song “Akhiyaan Nu Rehn De Kol,” calling the remake for the upcoming movie “Do Patti” a “cheap copy.”
Reshma, celebrated globally for her soulful voice and timeless hits like “Lambi Judai,” originally recorded “Akhiyaan Nu Rehn De Kol” in 1975. The song was recently remade as “Akhiyaan De Kol” for the film “Do Patti” starring Kriti Sanon and Kajol. The remake, with lyrics by Kausar Munir and vocals by Shilpa Rao, has drawn widespread criticism.
Directed by Shashanka Chaturvedi and written by Kanika Dhillon, “Do Patti” is set to release on Netflix on October 25, 2024. However, before its release, the film’s version of the song has ignited controversy, with many accusing Bollywood of disrespecting a cultural classic.
Siddiqui took to social media to voice his disappointment, saying, “Imitation can be flattering, but not when it means tearing apart a classic by a legend. Please show some respect for Reshma Jee and the legacy she left behind. Her music deserves to be treated with the dignity it commands, not reduced to just another sordid ripoff.”
Fans echoed his sentiments, with one YouTube user commenting, “Stop stealing Pakistani songs,” and another lamenting, “Reshma ji would have never imagined her song being portrayed this way.”
