RAWALPINDI: The escape of 14 undertrial prisoners from a prison van near Sihala has triggered a major probe, with police now detaining five Adiala Jail guards who were on duty at the time, including the guard in-charge.
Investigators have also started forensic analysis of the detained guards’ mobile phones and call records.
Key questions remain under review: how many of the inmates were handcuffed during meetings at Kahuta courts, how many guards were deployed with official weapons on the van, and how duty rosters were prepared. The inquiry team is also checking whether standard operating procedures for producing high-risk inmates in court were followed or violated.
The incident happened Tuesday evening. Fourteen Adiala Jail prisoners who had appeared before Kahuta courts escaped from the jail van near Sihala, within Islamabad limits.
Punjab IG Rao Abdul Karim has taken notice of the escape. SP Headquarters Mudassar Iqbal has been removed from his post and ordered to report to Lahore. DSP Headquarters Imtiaz Ahmed has been suspended with immediate effect.
The IG has sought a report from RPO Rawalpindi Region Babar Sarfraz Alpa.
