In any society, the exploitation of women is not a new issue, as almost every society to some extent, makes the weak a target of oppression and violence, subjecting them to all sorts of difficulties and tragedies.
Recent revelations by the Human Rights Committee have brought to light that in the past 4 years, 268 women in Punjab have fallen victim to gang rape. This alarming statistic demands immediate action to combat this crime.
It is essential to comprehend the severity of this issue. According to the Human Rights Commission report, within the last 4 years, 3,914 cases of molestation have been recorded, with 1,260 women being brutally murdered. These distressing figures highlight the urgent need for social interventions and efforts to counter such crimes.
Gang rape is linked to societal attitudes, cultural norms, economic disparities, and an imbalance of power. In many instances, an environment is created that encourages the perpetration of such crimes.
The incidents of gang rape can also increase due to the mistreatment of women, male dominance, and the lack of proper implementation of laws. It is crucial to formulate a comprehensive plan to tackle this issue, addressing the root causes contributing to its escalation.
Empowering women and providing education can be vital steps in countering social harassment. Promoting gender equality, eliminating discriminatory beliefs, and fostering a culture that respects women’s rights are imperative actions.
In forced marriages, if a woman disagrees, she is coerced. The public should openly discuss and address such issues to pave the way for smoother resolutions to the problems.
Some elements may think that discussing social harassment might lead to its further proliferation or that silence is the solution. However, ignoring the issue is highly discouraging. It’s like facing a danger and not confronting it, which is nothing short of cowardice.
What is needed is the rigorous enforcement of strict laws against social harassment and legislation that results in public hangings of those guilty of gang rape to deter future offenders.”
