Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently opened up about the surprising reason behind his decision to step away from acting.
Currently focused on promoting his production Laapataa Ladies, which has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, Khan shared his thoughts in an interview with BBC News. He discussed his growing interest in producing more films, supporting new talent, and his ambitious dream project, Mahabharata.
Khan revealed that his decision to quit acting was made before the release of Laal Singh Chaddha. While he is known for his massive fan following and constant media attention, it turns out that Khan had quietly stepped back from the film industry during the Covid-19 pandemic to spend more time with his family.
In the interview, Khan explained, “I told my family I’m done with acting and films. I didn’t want to produce, direct, or act. I just wanted to be with my family.”
Such a major decision from a prominent star might have caused a stir in India, where cinema holds a special place, but Khan said that his choice went largely unnoticed because the pandemic had slowed down movie productions. “No one knew about it,” he said.
Thankfully for his fans, Khan didn’t stay away for long. He is now back in the spotlight, promoting Laapataa Ladies, a film he produced that is India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.
Khan also discussed his passion for making a film on Mahabharata, calling it his “dream project.” He admitted, “It’s a very scary project. It’s so huge, and I am scared of getting it wrong. It’s a huge responsibility because as Indians, it’s something so close to us, it’s in our blood. I want to get it right. I want to make every Indian proud. I also want to show the world what India has. I don’t know if it will happen, but it’s something I want to work towards. So let’s see.”
