LONDON: England fast bowler Jofra Archer is set to undergo surgery on his troublesome right elbow on Friday, and may also miss a significant portion of the English season.
Although the ECB is reluctant to put any timeframe on his return – or go into any detail about the exact nature of the operation – it is understood England have not given up hope of him playing some part in the Test series against India, which is scheduled to be played in August and September.
Archer was already ruled out of England s two-Test series against New Zealand starting next month due to pain in his elbow. The 26-year-old returned to action for county side Sussex against Kent last week in a bid to regain match fitness but he only bowled five overs due to pain in the elbow.
“England and Sussex bowler Jofra Archer has been reviewed by a medical consultant in respect of his right elbow soreness. He will now proceed to surgery tomorrow,” the ECB said in a statement.
Archer also had surgery in March to remove a glass fragment from a tendon in his right hand, an injury he sustained in January when an attempt to clean his fish tank went wrong.
Archer was heavily bowled in the first few months of his international career. He played a huge part in England’s World Cup win – he was their highest wicket-taker in the campaign, bowled the most overs and required a pain-killing injection before delivering the Super Over in the final.
