SINDH: The voting process has commenced for by-elections in NA-221 Tharparkar District of Tharparkar in Sindh on Sunday (today).
According to Election Commission of Pakistan, 12 candidates are contesting the election. The seat had fallen vacant after the death of PPP, MNA Noor Mohammad Shah Jilani due to coronavirus.
The ECP has established 318 polling stations for the by-election and declared 13 of them as sensitive while 95 as highly sensitive. Overall 281,900 voters will cast their vote in the NA-221 Tharparkar.
The contest in the constituency is expected between PPP candidate Mir Ali Shah Jeelani and PTI candidate Nizamuddin Rahimoon.
The District Returning Officer (DRO) in the constituency said that police and Rangers personnel provide security during the polling process, which started at 8:00 am and culminate at 5:00 pm
The local administration has facilitated the travel of polling staff to reach their respective polling stations as 4,000 cops have been deployed in the constituency for maintaining the law and order situation.
Sindh Rangers would also be deployed at sensitive and highly sensitive polling stations along with the installation of 200 CCTV cameras at various stations.
The deceased MNA Noor Mohammad Shah Jilani received 61,903 votes and defeated Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to win the election.
He also contested elections from the Pakistan Muslim League’s (F) ticket from the NA-228 (Umerkot) constituency in the 2008 general elections but lost the seat to Nawab Muhammad Yousuf Talpur.
