RAWALPINDI: Authorities are set to take legal action against 27 traffic policemen who are accused of not returning fine amounts and causing immense losses to the traffic police department.
A list of 300 employees has been prepared which showed that 27 policemen were involved in pocketing 1-1.5 million rupees collected in fines and not depositing them in the bank. Police have issued charge sheets and notices for legal action where counterfeit fine books, seals and other records were confiscated.
Former Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ali Akbar had launched an inquiry but was transferred before the action could be taken. The new officer Rai Mazhar reopened the inquiry and said that action will be taken against 27 officers who collected fines by fake seals and receipt books.
The notices have been issued to 31 employees including one inspector. The officers who received notices include Ghulam Abbas, Asim Ashfaq, Asad Khalil, Hameed Ali, Asad Zeb, Khalid Gul, Amjad, Faisal Bashir, Imran Rashid, Israr Ahmed, Ashfaq and Adeel Abbasi.
Others who received notices include Mutahir Nawaz, Mazhar Iqbal, Mustansir Ali, Qaiser Mahmood, Saleem, Shahid Hussain, Suleiman, Ashraf, Yasir, Zaheer Abbas, Umar Farooq, Waheed Iqbal, Waheed Khan, Wasim Raza, Amir and Shah Rukh Abbas. ,
On the orders of former CTO Rawalpindi, Raja Bazar traffic police officer reported massive corruption among traffic police officers. The police officer said fines imposed through bogus challans are pocketed by the police personnel.
Former CTO gave full authority to the traffic officer to launch an inquiry discreetly after which a list of 300 employees was prepared which shocked the senior officers of the traffic police. When the bank was contacted, it was revealed that hefty fines of up to Rs3,500 were collected but no record was received from any branch of the bank.
It has finally been decided to take action against 27 employees who were involved in theft of Rs 1-1.5 million. CTO Rawalpindi has stopped the issuance of fine receipts and new officials have been deployed in their place, while the officer has vowed to punish those responsible.
