ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to increase the salaries of federal government employees by up to 40 percent.

According to sources, the talks with the federal government employees have been successful after which the government agreed to increase the salaries of the federal government employees by 40 percent.

On the other hand, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed said that he will announce the benefits and salaries for the federal government employees tomorrow.

Talking to the media, Defense Minister Pervez Khattak said that talks were held with the employees of grades 1 to 16 of the federal government. The employees have also demanded an increase in the salaries of the provincial employees. “However, we do not have the authority to increase the salaries of the provinces. We will send directives to the governments to increase their salaries,” he maintained.

Earlier in January, the finance ministry has once again ruled out the possibility of immediately increasing salaries and perks of civil servants despite a threat of an indefinite strike by over five dozen government organisations and labour unions.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has not increased the salaries of the employees in this fiscal year despite close to double-digit inflation in the past two years and a nominal increase in salaries in the previous fiscal year.

On 3rd February, all Government Employees Grand Alliance staged a protest in different parts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), demanding that all the ad hoc relief should be included in the basic salaries of the teachers and other government employees.

The protesters had warned to stage a sit-in in Islamabad on Feb 10 if their issues were not resolved. The government in November last year reconstituted the PPC by expanding its membership from 18th to 25th to prepare recommendations for providing relief.
