RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has reiterated that Pakistan will continue to play its positive role for peace and stability in the region.
He expressed his views during a meeting with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, where they discussed the Afghan peace efforts as the US voiced concerns over the 20-day break in negotiations between the Afghan government and Taliban.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Khalilzad was accompanied by General Austin Scott Miller, Commander Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan, while General Qamar was assisted by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) DG and other senior army officers.
Matters of mutual interest including the overall regional security situation with particular reference to the ongoing Afghan reconciliation process were discussed during the meeting.
During the meeting, the Army Chief appreciated the role of the Resolute Support Mission for peace and stability in Afghanistan. The visiting dignitary appreciated Pakistan’s untiring efforts for facilitating the process towards the mutual objective of peace in the region.
It is pertinent to mention here that Zalmay Khalilzad, who had remained active in finalizing a historic deal between the United States and Afghan Taliban, is now working with Pakistan to make the intra-Afghan dialogue a success.
The Afghan government and Taliban after months of talks in Doha recently agreed on the rules of engagement to discuss the most substantive issues including the political road map and comprehensive ceasefire.
