KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday dismissed a petition seeking directives for authorities to permit the consumption of up to 10 grams of charas (hashish).

A two-member bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar dismissed the petition filed by Ghulam Asghar as being non-maintainable after a preliminary hearing.

During the hearing, the judge expressed immense displeasure for moving the petition. “Do you want all people to start consuming cannabis in the country,” remarked Justice Mazhar.

The judge asked the petitioner how much fine should be imposed on him for filing the petition. The petitioner said he was a poor man and brought the case to court in public interest. The citizen demanded that the government should be directed to abolish a fine on possession of 10 grams hashish.

“Police arrest shareef log (gentlefolk) who consume charas,” he said, adding several countries around the world permit the recreational use of the drug. “Go to those countries, if you want to consume (the drug),” Justice Mazhar retorted, questioning why he brought petition to the court.

The citizen insisted that allowing the use of hashish will generate more revenue for the country “We don’t want such revenue. There are other legal means to increase revenue,” the SHC judge said before throwing the petition.
