ISLAMABAD: Police raided a wedding reception to arrest a proclaimed offender who managed to escape despite being under custody.
Subinspector Shahid Asghar Tarnol Police Station conducted a raid without receiving orders from higher officials and harassed guests at the wedding. The misuse of authority has lead to a severe reaction from civil society and the aggrieved wedding hosts who have expressed anger against the police officer.
The police were on the lookout for suspect Momin Khan Afridi who had been nominated in a narcotics case. Police had conducted several raids but the suspect managed to evade arrest on numerous occasions.
A day earlier, Subinspector Shahid Asghar received a tip-off about the presence of the suspect in Usmania locality. The policeman decided to conduct a raid immediately to apprehend him without receiving orders from higher-ups.
Police conducted a raid at a wedding and arrested him. However, Afridi’s accomplices immediately created a commotion and surrounded the police, and eventually managed to free him from police custody while brandishing their weapons and resorting to aerial firing.
The suspect’s accomplices also hurdled stones and broke the glass of a police vehicle’s. A case has been registering to aiding and abetting a proclaimed offender and causing damage to public property. Police have started investigations and have vowed to arrest the fugitive.
