LAHORE: Former fast bowler Mohammad Akram is expected to be appointed as the new chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team after the resignation of Misbah-ul-Haq.

Former Shoaib Akhtar also tweeted that his sources have told him that Akram will get the role after Misbah’s resignation. “Good luck to him on this tricky but important position,” he said.

In 2012, Akram was appointed as a bowling coach for the Pakistan cricket team, a tenure that ended in 2014. He was the head coach of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Peshawar Zalmi before Darren Sammy’s appointment and led them to a title win in the second edition of the tournament.

Misbah-ul-Haq resigned from the post of the chief selector, announcing that he will continue as the head coach only. He will coinue serve in his role till October 30 and will select the team for the upcoming Zimbabwe series and the tour to New Zealand.

Misbah said that he had been feeling a lot of pressure to fulfill both his duties, but his decision may have been influenced by PCB’s new code of ethics which puts an emphasis on eradicating any conflict of interest.

Mohammad Akram, a former fast bowler, played 9 Test matches and 23 ODIs for the national team. His performances were less than impressive, picking up 17 wickets in Tests and 19 in ODIs.
